- The United States has no VAT — enter your own combined sales tax rate instead.
- Switch direction to work backwards from a gross price to the net amount and the tax on it.
How to use it
- 1 Choose your country to load its standard and reduced rates, or type a custom percentage into the rate box.
- 2 Enter the amount and pick the direction: add tax to a net price, or strip it out of a gross price.
- 3 Read the net base, the tax amount and the gross total from the breakdown underneath.
What you should know
Every country that runs a value-added tax sets its own standard rate plus a handful of reduced rates for food, books, transport or energy, and the arithmetic that converts between a shelf price and the taxable base is the same everywhere. Sellers who list gross prices to consumers but keep net figures in their ledgers hit the same trap repeatedly: removing a 20 percent rate from a gross amount means dividing by 1.20, not multiplying by 0.80. That single mistake understates net revenue by roughly four percent and quietly distorts every margin figure built on top of it.
This calculator works in both directions and carries the current standard and reduced rates for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Australia, Canada, India and Turkey, so picking a country fills the rate chips for you. Goods and services tax regimes such as the Australian, Canadian and Indian ones behave identically to VAT for this calculation, which is why they share the same presets. The United States is listed too, with a warning rather than a rate: it has no VAT, and its sales tax is set per state, county and city, so you type your own combined rate. Numbers with commas or dots both parse, and nothing you enter leaves the page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a tax-inclusive price?
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate as a decimal — a 20 percent rate means dividing by 1.20. Switch the direction toggle to "Remove VAT" and the calculator does this for you, showing the tax portion separately.
Which countries are covered by the rate presets?
The United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, plus the goods and services tax regimes of Australia, Canada and India. Any rate that is not listed can be typed straight into the rate box.
Can I use this for United States sales tax?
The United States has no VAT. Sales tax is added at checkout and varies by state, county and city, so look up your combined rate and enter it manually; the add and remove arithmetic itself is identical.
