WebP to GIF Converter

Convert animated WebP files to standard GIF format with full frame timing preserved. Process animations entirely in your browser without uploading your files.

Animated or static WebP · one file

Tips

  • WebP true-color frames are quantized to 256 colors, which can introduce visible dithering or banding on smooth gradients.
  • Frame delays and loop counts are read directly from your source WebP container to preserve exact animation timing.
  • Expect the resulting GIF file to be significantly larger than your original WebP asset due to legacy LZW compression.

How to use it

  1. 1 Select or drop your animated WebP file into the upload area.
  2. 2 Adjust optional frame timing or loop parameters if needed.
  3. 3 Process the animation and save the finished GIF directly to your computer.

What you should know

Animated WebP utilizes modern 24-bit color coding and predictive frame compression to deliver rich animations at minimal file sizes. However, many legacy email clients, documentation platforms, community forums, and older desktop applications still require the standard Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). Converting WebP to GIF restores universal playback across environments that lack WebP animation decoders. Because GIF relies on older LZW compression without modern inter-frame delta encoding, converting from WebP will expand the file size and reduce the color spectrum to an indexed 8-bit palette per frame.

This tool extracts every frame from your WebP animation, builds an optimized 256-color palette, and compiles a compliant GIF file directly inside your browser. All frame timestamps, presentation delays, and loop cycles are preserved during the transition. Processing runs entirely on your device via client-side WebAssembly, meaning heavy or high-framerate animations may take a few moments to render single-threaded. Note that 8-bit alpha channel transparency from WebP is flattened to 1-bit binary transparency, converting translucent edge pixels into solid or clear points.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the converted GIF larger than the original WebP file?

WebP relies on advanced temporal and spatial compression algorithms, whereas GIF uses basic LZW compression designed in 1987. Without modern predictive frame compression, GIF files are frequently two to five times larger than equivalent WebP animations.

Are transparent backgrounds preserved during conversion?

Yes, but transparency is mapped to GIF 1-bit binary transparency. Any smooth, semi-transparent drop shadows or anti-aliased edge pixels in the source WebP will be rendered as either completely transparent or fully opaque.

Do my animation files get uploaded to a remote server?

No, all decoding, palette quantization, and GIF encoding occur entirely within your web browser using WebAssembly. Your animation data never leaves your device and remains completely private.
