Repair GIF

Recover readable frames from broken, truncated, or corrupted GIF files to build a working animation entirely in your browser without uploading your data.

1Drop a GIF or animation here

GIF, APNG, WebP, AVIF · static images are accepted too

Tips

  • Unreadable or corrupted frames are automatically skipped, and the total count of recovered frames is shown after processing.
  • Truncated downloads often leave a half-rendered trailing frame that you can cut out using a GIF trimmer.
  • Severe palette corruption can cause color shifts across rebuilt frames because each frame indexes up to 256 colors.

How to use it

  1. 1 Select or drag and drop your corrupted or partially downloaded GIF file into the repair tool.
  2. 2 Wait while the browser scans the byte stream, decodes readable frames, and discards unreadable blocks.
  3. 3 Preview the reconstructed animation and save the newly encoded GIF to your device.

What you should know

Animated GIFs rely on sequential data blocks encoded with LZW compression alongside frame-specific delay metadata. When a network stream drops, a file transfer truncates, or raw byte streams get corrupted, standard image decoders fail entirely or freeze on the damaged block. Because the GIF specification requires strict block terminators and color table references, a single missing byte in an LZW stream can invalidate all subsequent frames. Salvaging salvageable animation segments prevents the need to recreate motion graphics, UI recordings, or social clips from scratch.

This tool isolates and decodes every valid frame remaining in the damaged file directly inside your browser. Corrupted byte blocks and unreadable frames are bypassed rather than crashing the renderer. The recovered frames are then repacked into a brand-new GIF container using a client-side encoder that rebuilds global and local color tables constrained to 256 colors per frame. Proprietary metadata, application extensions, and ruined frames are discarded, but all surviving visual timing and transparency indexes are reconstructed into a playable, fully compliant animation file.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some frames missing from the repaired GIF?

If the underlying byte stream contains corrupted LZW blocks or missing frame terminators, the parser skips those broken frames entirely so the rest of the animation can render smoothly.

Does repairing a GIF reduce its visual quality?

Recovered frames retain their original dimensions and timing, but the re-encoding step generates a fresh 8-bit palette of up to 256 colors per frame, which may slightly alter color quantization.

Are my broken GIF files uploaded to a remote server?

No, all file decoding, frame recovery, and GIF re-encoding take place entirely within your browser, ensuring your files never leave your computer or mobile device.
