To remove audio from a video, load the file into a mute tool that deletes the sound track and copies the picture stream unchanged, then download the silent copy. Because the video is not re-encoded, the process takes seconds, the image quality is identical to the original, and the file keeps its format.

People strip audio for very different reasons. A seller wants a product clip without a noisy workshop in the background. A creator wants to add fresh music later without the camera microphone underneath. A team needs to share a screen recording without the private call that was running during it. And a web designer needs a silent loop for a hero banner. In all of these cases, you do not need to touch the picture, so you should not re-encode it. The Mute Video tool does exactly that, locally in your browser.

How to remove audio from a video step by step

  1. Open Mute Video and drop your file. Drag the video onto the drop area or click it to browse. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, FLV and 3GP are accepted, up to 1 GB. A preview player appears, with the file name and size shown above it.
  2. Confirm it is the right file. Play a few seconds of the preview. The preview is muted by default, so check the source in your normal player first if you are unsure which take has the unwanted sound.
  3. Press Remove audio. There are no quality or format settings to choose, on purpose: the tool keeps the original video stream and container. The first time you use a video tool on the site, the browser downloads the video engine once (about 30 MB).
  4. Wait a few seconds. Because nothing is re-encoded, processing time is mostly the time needed to read and write the file, not to recompress frames. Large files still take longer than small ones.
  5. Check the result. The silent copy appears in a player below the button with its new file size. Unmute that player and turn your volume up to confirm there is no sound left.
  6. Download the file. The name ends with a “muted” suffix and uses the same extension as your source, so a MOV stays a MOV and an MP4 stays an MP4. Your original file is not modified.

Why stream copy is the right way to mute a video

A video file is a container holding separate streams, typically one video stream and one audio stream. Removing audio only requires writing a new container without the audio stream. The video data can be copied as it is, which is called stream copy.

Re-encoding, in contrast, decodes every frame and compresses it again. That is necessary when you change resolution, format or quality, but when you only drop the sound, it wastes time and adds a small generational loss for no benefit.

Mute Video (stream copy)Copied unchanged, identical qualitySeconds for most filesSame as the sourceYou only want the sound gone

Things to know before you mute

A muted file has no audio track at all

The result is not a video with a silent sound track; it is a video with no sound track. Almost every player and platform handles that fine. A few editing apps and upload forms display a “no audio” notice or behave differently with such files. If a workflow insists on an audio track, set the volume to zero in an editor instead.

The format stays the same

Stream copy cannot change the codec. An iPhone MOV with HEVC video stays HEVC after muting, and it will still refuse to play in some browsers and Windows apps. In that case, convert it with the MOV to MP4 converter either before or after muting; the MOV to MP4 browser guide explains when that is necessary. For other formats, the guide to converting video files for any device or platform covers which codecs play where.

Silent loops for websites

Background videos on landing pages and Shopify themes autoplay reliably only when they are muted, because browsers block autoplay with sound. Removing the audio track also drops data that would never be played. Many sites prefer WebM for these loops; the MP4 to WebM converter produces one. Keep the muted attribute on the video element in your theme code, since browser autoplay rules check the element, not only the file.

Size limits

Audio usually makes up only a small part of a video file, so muting does not solve an upload size problem on its own. Mute first, then run the silent file through the video compressor with a target size.

Common mistakes

  • Using a converter just to drop the sound. The picture gets re-encoded, the job takes much longer and quality drops slightly. Use a stream copy tool like Mute Video when sound is the only thing you want to change.
  • Expecting the muted MOV to play everywhere. Stream copy keeps the original codec, so compatibility problems remain. Convert to H.264 MP4 if the file will not play on the target device.
  • Deleting the original after muting. The removed sound cannot be recovered from the silent copy. Keep the source file until the project is finished.
  • Assuming muting clears every rights issue. Removing the soundtrack avoids claims on the music, but footage, artwork or clips from other creators inside the frame are still covered. Check the platform’s policy for what is visible, not only what is audible.
  • Assuming muting makes the file small enough. The size drops only a little. Compress after muting if you have to meet an upload limit.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing audio from a video reduce the picture quality? No, removing audio with the Mute Video tool does not change the picture at all. The video stream is copied byte for byte into the new file and only the audio track is left out.

Will the muted file be smaller than the original? Yes, but usually only a little. Audio is a small share of most video files, so expect a modest drop; to make the file much smaller, compress the video afterward.

Can I remove audio from only part of a video? No, the Mute Video tool removes the sound track from the whole file. To silence one section, trim the video into parts, mute the part you want silent, and merge the clips back together.

Can I get the removed audio back later? No, the muted copy contains no audio at all. The tool never changes your original file, so keep it if you might need the sound again.

Mute your clip in seconds

When sound is the only problem, the fastest and cleanest fix is to leave the picture alone and drop the audio track. You keep full quality, the original format and your time. Open Mute Video, drop the file, press Remove audio, and download a silent copy without uploading your footage anywhere.
